SAINTS DARE TO BEAT DEVILS, AND LOOK FORWARD TO “STAG”-DO THIS FRIDAY!
After the previous week’s rain, Kyle O’Reilly’s 20-over team finally got their 2019 campaign up and running with the short trip to Denton Daredevils on Friday night.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, but a tidy bowling performance, with wickets for all 5 bowlers used, saw them restricted to 140 for 7 from their 20 overs. Matt Sonczak bowled 2 maidens – quite a remarkable feat in this form of the game – to finish with 4-2-21-2, while the skipper opened the bowling himself, taking 2 for 26 from his 4 overs. Only Umar Waheed (85 from 58 balls) and Ryan Halpin (25) reached double figures for the Daredevils.
Such is the fire-power of Saints’ batting line up in 2019 that they would back themselves to chase this target down and, despite the loss of Dan Moriarty for a duck early on, they did just that with nearly 6 overs to spare. A 2nd wicket partnership of 114 in just 11 overs between Neil Hornbuckle (79* from 48 balls) and Matt Sonczak (55 from 34) took us to within sight of the winning line, and was broken only when the ex-Derbyshire player was run out by former Saint, Casey Roche. An emphatic 7-wicket victory was sealed in some style with a third maximum from our South African professional.
Looking ahead to this Friday (24th May), why not start the Bank Holiday weekend with some quick-fire action as Saints welcome Dukinfield Stags to Sycamore Park for a 6.00pm start? The Stags only game to date – they were the “odd team out” in Week 2 – was a defeat, ironically also against the Daredevils. Coloured kits & music will provide the razzmatazz, the Bar will (of course!) be open and, who knows, the BBQ may even make its 2019 debut!!
It’ll be FAST, it’ll be FUN….see you there!!!
